Recognizing Electrical Hazards Early Can Save Lives

At Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, we understand that delivering electricity is only one part of our responsibility; protecting lives is even more important. Electricity powers homes, businesses, and communities, but when safety rules are ignored, it can quickly become dangerous. That is why we introduced the Self-Care Report Issue Portal, a simple and direct way for customers to report electrical hazards, unsafe conditions, and service-related safety concerns so our teams can respond quickly and prevent accidents before they happen.

To report any safety issue, customers can visit the AEDC Self-Care Report Issue Portal at https://aedc-selfcare.convergenceondemand.net/report-issue.

Electrical hazards are not always obvious, but early reporting can make all the difference. Customers should immediately report damaged infrastructure such as leaning or fallen poles, sagging wires, exposed cables, broken transformers, or damaged feeders. Unsafe activities like trading, building, or children playing too close to power lines should also be flagged. Likewise, signs of vandalism or tampering such as broken transformer fences, missing locks, stolen cables, or illegal connections should never be ignored. Hazards within homes and businesses, including burning smells from meters, sparking sockets, repeated breaker trips, or overheating equipment, also require urgent attention.

Protect Yourself by Following Basic Safety Precautions

Electricity can be dangerous even without direct contact. High-voltage lines can arc unexpectedly, especially when safety distances are ignored. For this reason, customers should maintain a minimum clearance of 5.5 meters from high-tension wires and avoid using electrical poles or stay wires to dry clothes, support ladders, or lean objects. Building structures, kiosks, or carrying out business activities directly under power lines is also extremely risky and should be avoided.

In emergency situations involving fallen live wires, sparking transformers, smoke, fire, or any risk of electrocution, personal safety must come first. Customers should stay at least 10 meters away from the hazard, keep others clear of the area, and never attempt to touch, move, or repair electrical equipment themselves. Where it is safe to do so, they may switch off power supply at home while immediately contacting AEDC.

Customers can also reduce risks in their homes and businesses by observing simple electrical safety habits. Avoid overloading sockets and extension boxes, replace damaged plugs and wires promptly, keep electrical appliances away from water, and never handle electrical devices with wet hands. It is also important to engage only qualified electricians for installations and repairs.

Report Quickly for Faster Response

Prompt and accurate reporting helps us respond more effectively and prevent hazards from escalating. To help our teams act quickly, customers should provide the exact location of the issue, including street names, nearby landmarks, or communities, along with a clear description of the problem. Photos can also be useful, but only if they can be taken safely from a distance. Once a report is submitted through the portal, the system generates a reference number that allows customers to track the progress of their complaint.

Customers can report issues directly via the AEDC Self-Care Portal here: https://aedc-selfcare.convergenceondemand.net/report-issue, or reach us through our call centre on 0803 907 0070, or by email at customercare@abujaelectricity.com.

At AEDC, safety is a shared responsibility. No business, convenience, or shortcut is worth more than a human life. By reporting hazards early and observing basic safety precautions, customers can help protect their families, neighbours, and communities. If you notice an electrical hazard, do not wait; report it immediately through the AEDC Self-Care Portal.
