Understanding Preloaded Units on Your Meter

Getting a prepaid meter is one of the best ways to take control of your electricity consumption. It gives you the power to monitor your usage, plan your spending, and enjoy transparency in billing. At AEDC, we are committed to ensuring that every customer has access to a properly tested, functional, and reliable meter.

When your new prepaid meter is installed, it does not come empty. Each meter is loaded with a small amount of electricity, known as preloaded units. These units serve two important purposes:

  • To provide immediate power supply after installation. We believe no customer should be left in darkness while waiting to make their first purchase.
  • To test the meter’s functionality. Before your meter is handed over, our technical team uses these units to confirm that it measures energy accurately, communicates with our vending system, and accepts tokens properly.

Now, because those units are already inside the meter when it is installed, their value is later deducted to balance your energy account. This deduction usually happens at your first recharge, which is why your initial token may appear to deliver fewer units than expected.

However, in some cases, the deduction may occur at a later purchase. While it is standard practice for the deduction to take place during the first vend, there are instances where system updates or data synchronization may cause it to reflect after subsequent recharges. This does not affect your meter’s performance or the accuracy of your energy readings.

Please note that this is not a debt or an additional charge. It is simply the recovery of the electricity that was made available to you through the preloaded units that came with your meter.

At AEDC, our goal is to keep your metering process transparent, fair, and convenient. The preloaded unit process is approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and ensures that every meter deployed meets the required standards before use.

So, if you ever notice a deduction on your first or subsequent recharge, remember it is not a penalty, and it is certainly not an inherited debt. It is just the system reconciling the power that kept your home running from the very first day your meter was installed.
