Festive Savings or Festive Scam? What AEDC Customers Need to Know This Season

The festive season is a period for laughter, cheer and making fun memories but with fraudsters out there, things can take a different turn. Scammers usually starts with a forwarded message.

“Have you seen this AEDC promo?”

“₦5,000 gives you ₦7,500 electricity.”

“Better load now before it ends.”

As the festive season approaches across Abuja, Niger, Nasarawa, and Kogi States, many households are preparing for guests, longer nights, and higher electricity use. In the middle of this preparation, some customers have encountered eye-catching messages and graphics promising electricity bonuses and discounts often shared on WhatsApp groups or social media timelines.

Unfortunately, these messages are not genuine.

Setting the Record Straight

Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) wishes to clearly inform its customers that no electricity promotion, bonus, or discount scheme is currently being offered. AEDC is not associated with any claims of “50% bonus,” “festive electricity promo,” or similar offers circulating online.

These messages are the work of fraudsters attempting to take advantage of the season and the trust customers place in familiar brands.

Why Scammers Target the Festive Season

The festive period is one of the busiest times of the year for households within AEDC’s franchise area. Power usage increases, prepaid meters are topped up more frequently, and people are more likely to act quickly on information that promises savings.

Scammers know this. They design messages that:

Look official and professionally branded and promise urgent, time-limited benefits. They also encourage quick action before verification.

Once a customer engages, they may be asked to share bank details, pin, code, make payments to personal accounts, or click unsafe links leading to financial loss.

What AEDC Will Never Do

To help customers stay safe, it is important to know that AEDC will:

  • Never offer electricity bonuses or promos through unofficial channels
  • Never ask for PINs, tokens, or bank details via WhatsApp or private messages
  • Never request payment to personal or unverified accounts

All genuine AEDC communication is shared only through official channels.
