Powering Green Revolution: AEDC’s Role in Mini-Grids and Sustainable Energy for Community Development
At Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc, we believe reliable electricity is more than just power, it is opportunity. Picture a community where children read after sunset, businesses stay open longer, and health centres operate without interruption. This is no longer a dream. Through our partnerships with innovative mini-grid developers, we are bringing clean, dependable energy to communities that have waited too long for reliable power.
Our interconnected mini-grids, primarily solar-powered, are delivering sustainable electricity to remote areas beyond the reach of the national grid. These projects not only light homes, they drive economic growth, protect the environment, and strengthen the social fabric of communities.
What Are Mini-Grids?
Mini-grids are small-scale, self-sufficient energy systems that use renewable sources like solar to provide affordable, reliable electricity to rural communities. They are quicker and more cost-effective to deploy than large, centralized grids, making them the perfect solution for areas underserved by traditional infrastructure.
The Impact of AEDC Mini-Grids
- Economic Growth: Reliable power fuels productivity, enables longer operating hours, and expands market opportunities.
- Environmental Gains: Solar solutions cut diesel use and reduce harmful CO₂ emissions.
- Community Empowerment: Schools, healthcare facilities, and public spaces thrive with dependable electricity.
Transforming Communities
In Toto, Nasarawa State, our 352.24kWp Interconnected Hybrid Solar Mini-Grid now powers over 2,800 homes and businesses, allowing students to study after dark and shops to stay open late.
One shop owner shared: “For the first time, I don’t have to close early. I can serve customers until late, and my income has grown.”
In Duduguru, our partnership with Husk Power Systems will soon deliver 656kW of uninterrupted solar power, improving quality of life, boosting local economies, and supporting community growth.
Mini-grids do more than provide electricity, they transform lives. In Toto, safer streets, improved healthcare, and new job opportunities are now a reality. The project will also reduce approximately 1,920 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually, contributing to Nigeria’s climate goals.
We are committed to ensuring no community is left in the dark. As we expand our mini-grid network, AEDC will continue to power homes, businesses, and dreams, creating a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
